Wine cellars are typically spaces that stimulate relaxation; a place where you can set aside your worries at work, at home, or anywhere else, and just enjoy that tasty glass of wine peacefully. Traditional wine storage rooms are built around natural, earthy palettes, but modern wine cellars? They open the door to bold, futuristic designs—and this latest project by CustomWineCellars.com is a stunning example.
Built in partnership with IronWine Cellars, this modern home wine cellar redefines innovation. From sleek glass panels and glossy custom wine racks to RGB lighting that lets you set the mood with a tap, it’s everything a contemporary wine lover could dream of!
Designing a Wine Cellar to Complement Your Home
Every wine cellar project begins by considering the existing interior of the home. For this property, a spacious spare room with an unused wall provided the perfect canvas for a sleek, modern home wine cellar.
The original space featured black tiles and laminated red-brown walls, which inspired a vibrant design palette. Just outside the glass wine cellar, the clients added two leather sofas, making it a cozy yet stylish spot for entertaining.
Glass Doors: A Modern Must-Have
Glass is a hallmark of modern wine cellars, offering clean, minimalist aesthetics while showcasing the collection inside. For this project, the team used dual-paned tempered glass, ideal for insulating against Las Vegas’s extreme temperatures.
“Single-paned glass can work in more stable climates,” explains Senior Design Consultant Steve Pantalemon, “but in places like Las Vegas, dual-paned glass ensures the cellar maintains the perfect environment.”
Framed in matte black stainless steel, the double-swinging French doors add a bold statement. Magnets between the doors provide a seamless lock, ensuring they stay securely closed—a practical feature for any busy household.
Advanced Cooling System for Optimal Wine Preservation
A state-of-the-art cooling system is the backbone of any high-performing wine cellar, and this project at The Peaks in Las Vegas is no exception. For this custom modern wine room, we chose the HS 8600 cooling system from US Cellar Systems—a robust, high-static, fully ducted system that ensures ideal storage conditions for the client’s collection. What makes the HS 8600 the perfect fit?
Whisper-Quiet Operation
Among all the features of the HS 8600, its ability to keep a silent environment stands out. It does come with noisy components, but these machines, including the motor and condenser, are installed outside the wine cellar. By being away from the room, the noise and vibrations are isolated.
Thermal Protection for Dallas’ Climate
The HS8600 is designed with a thermally protected motor, keeping it from overheating even in extreme heat. It allows the system to perform efficiently 24/7 and maintain the wine cellar’s optimal temperature regardless of any temperature changes outside.
Consistent Temperature and Humidity Control
Maintaining proper humidity levels is just as important as controlling temperature when it comes to preserving wine. The HS 8600 excels at both, ensuring that the cellar stays within the recommended 50–70% humidity range. This prevents corks from drying out, which can compromise the seal and lead to wine spoilage.
High Static Pressure for Precise Cooling
The “high static” capability of the HS 8600 refers to its ability to deliver precise cooling through ductwork over longer distances. This makes it an excellent choice for larger cellars or those with unique layouts, like this project. The copper tubing, carefully run through the walls and connected to the condenser, ensures efficient cooling distribution throughout the space.
Energy Efficiency and Custom Design
Because this wine room was built from scratch, we optimized the insulation to complement the HS 8600’s capabilities. After applying 3–4 inches of closed-cell spray foam to the walls, we added greenboard, plywood, and textured paint to seal the space effectively. This collaboration between insulation and the cooling system ensures energy efficiency, reducing strain on the unit and keeping operational costs low.
Future-Proof Cooling for Modern Home Wine Cellars
This cooling system isn’t just built for today—it’s designed to grow with the homeowner’s collection. The HS 8600’s capabilities make it scalable, ensuring it can handle expanded storage or additional cooling demands if the wine room evolves.
Glossy Custom Wine Racks for Modern Home Wine Cellars
While metal racks are a popular choice for modern wine cellars, this project called for something unique: glossy, white-laminated custom racks.
The bottom section features 20 pull-out drawers, each equipped with six metal cradles for label-forward storage of 750ml bottles. Additionally, 12 triangular bins provide cork-forward storage, while a spacious countertop above offers room for decanting and wine tools.
The upper racks incorporate dual-deep matte-black metal rods to accommodate both standard and magnum bottles. The design also includes an open space at the center for artwork or a mirror, adding a personalized touch to the display. With a capacity of 920 bottles, this cellar is ready to grow with the owners’ collection.
RGB Lighting: A Dynamic Design Element
Lighting can make or break the ambiance of a wine cellar, and this one takes it to the next level. While warm and white LEDs are traditional favorites, the client opted for RGB lighting for a more dynamic, entertainment-ready vibe.
RGB lights can be set to a single color or cycle through multiple hues, transforming the wine cellar with just a tap. Whether hosting a party or enjoying a quiet evening, the lighting creates a customized atmosphere that complements the occasion.
